Monthly Archives: January 2020

It is middle of January (2020) and we got our major snowfall of the year. We get it every year but not at the same time. Our winter was pleasant until this week. Our temperatures dropped below 0 degrees Celsius and then the snow came in piles. First day just a skiff but following days it accumulated to knee high.
Last week I was admiring our many blooming plants in January  . Lots of them thought that spring was coming.

I have few Hellebores around and they think it is time for them to show off.

V
Hardy cyclamen (my favourite little plant)

Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Pink Dawn’ looks like little jewels shining in the air by our deck. Favorite spot for hummingbirds to hang out in summer ( and winter) and good spot for us to watch them to interact. They are very territorial but we have plenty of feeders around.

Garrya Elliptica  is interesting winter bloomer as well. This is only a young plant.

Eranthis hyemalis (Winter Aconite)

Then came the white “stuff” and all got buried. Oh well, peonies will love it and I put more sensitive plants  in pots in the greenhouse.

So calm, quiet and peaceful.

Last year the snow storm came in February and it was worse than this year . The picture bellow is from February 2019.

Thanks goodness for indoors blooms

Gorgeous Amaryllis

Good part of our weather on the Island is that it does not stay for very long. In a week all this snow will be gone and more rain will come. I am little bit worried about our hummingbirds when this kind of weather comes.. Some of them stay all winter . So far temperatures are not extremely low and we do feed them.

Not being able to go out for a few days always encourages me to do little bit of baking.

Yummy breakfast blueberry and plum cake will not last long.

Raisin bread with Golden and Thompson raisins

Does not look greatest but tastes OK.
